Ralph Drewfs

Ralph was a native Oregonian, the son of Marjorie Stearns Drewfs and Henry Fredrick Drewfs, and a Grant High School graduate. He went on to spend four years at the United States Military Academy, West Point, New York, graduating in 1963. He followed his academic studies graduating from Airborne and Ranger schools. After serving two tours of duty in Viet Nam with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, he resigned from the Army, and moved his young family to Troy, Ohio, where he held engineering management positions with the Hobart Corporation. He received his Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from the University of Dayton in Ohio, and added an Accounting Diploma from the International Accountants Society in Chicago.

   The family moved to Erie, PA where Ralph was a Director of Engineering with the American Sterilizer Company. When the company was sold he decided to move his family back home to Oregon where he completed his working career with ODOT.

   During his time in Oregon he became a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and was honored as a fellow of ASME. This spring he was awarded the 2017 Engineer of the Year award, by the Professional Engineers of Oregon.

   Ralph’s interests outside of work included being a member of Mazamas, and summiting Mount Hood four times. He was an avid cyclist and rode Cycle Oregon for many years with his beloved bike team, Team Crab, Not the fastest just the best.

   He passed away peacefully, August 24th in Hospice Care at his home in Lake Oswego, with his wife of 52 years, Joy by his side. He is survived by his son, Mark (Marina) and granddaughter, Melody of Seattle. An older brother, Henry F. (Sharon) of Bend, and many nieces and nephews. His eldest son, Erik, predeceased him in 1996.

   A celebration of life will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 147 NW 19th Avenue, Portland Oregon on October 13th, 1:00 p.m.,  Bishop Michael Hanley officiating and Dean Nathan LeRud will assist. Reception to ffollow in the cathedral social hall.
