We are a local family owned company. Management and staff live right here in your community. Our President and board members are all native Oregonians. The trust that thousands of Oregonians have placed in us is not taken lightly. We realize that each individual family is unique and by providing personalized service with reasonable prices, we have separated ourselves from many typical funeral homes and cemeteries. Wilhelm’s Portland Memorial Funeral Home, Mausoleum & Crematory began as Portland Cremation Association in 1901, forming the northwest’s first cremation association. The cornerstone was placed February, 5, 1901 in the still-existing historic chapel structure. Included in this first building, called the Rose Room, were three crematories, a chapel and niches for cremation memorials. The Povey Brothers, Louis C. Tiffany and the Gerlichs (stained glass artists) designed & installed many of the beautiful historic stained glass skylights and windows throughout the mausoleum, including the massive skylight above the main chapel entryway. In 1910 construction continued on niche and vault room memorials underneath and south of the chapel structure. At that time, it was renamed “The Portland Memorial”. Construction and improvements have continued over the last 100 years. Most corridors in the mausoleum are named after United States Presidents. Many of the sanctuary and chapel areas have religious themes and many individual rooms have floral names or themes. The great mausoleum has 8 floors, 3 elevators and several miles of indoor hallways and rooms. Covering two and a half city blocks, it is one of the largest indoor cemeteries in the country. In 2008, Wilhelm Funeral Home, a private locally owned company acquired ownership and management of the Portland Memorial Funeral Home and Portland Memorial Mausoleum. With the two formerly separate entities now merged together, our company offers the services of a funeral home, several chapel areas, crematory, mausoleum and cremation garden memorials in one convenient location.
