Marie I. (Avolio) Vehrs

December 7, 1923 ~ February 12, 2018 (age 94)

Marie was born in a house in S. W. Portland, Oregon to parents Vincenzo and Filomena Avolio. She grew up in the Westmoreland neighborhood and attended Llewelyn Grade School and Commerce High School. Upon graduation she began her career working in a claims office in downtown Portland. After starting a family, she worked from home doing dictation and typing claim reports. Later as her children were older she returned to the workplace becoming Head of Female Personnel at Pacific N.W. Claims Service. Working through the lunch hour as to get off an hour early, Marie made sure to be home for her daughters as they came home from school.

After meeting at the dances, dating and discovering their mutual interests, values and love for each other, she married William Vehrs on August 21,1948 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she’s been a member since the age of 4. Her husband, best friend and love of her life passed in 2000.

A competitive, play to win, good sport, Marie was a bowler, a golfer, loved camping, playing games, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles and followed the Blazers with enthusiasm.  Always active, walking, socializing, volunteering as a teacher’s aide and keeping a beautiful lawn and yard, Marie was never idle. She had a love and appreciation for music and passed that on to her daughters by giving the opportunity of music lessons.

Marie lived a wonderfully rich life full of the Italian culture, heritage and tradition. She shared and passed these meaningful experiences on to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

For the last year Marie lived at Brookdale Assisted Living where she made many new friends. She passed away in a peaceful stillness with her daughters by her side. She is survived by daughters Ellen Kennedy, Beverly Roberts (Arnold), grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephew, all whom were loved by her more than words can say.

Celebration of Life will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. 3910 S. E. 11th ave. Portland, OR 97202. Monday, February 19th.  Rosary at 10:40 A.M. and followed by the Funeral Mass at 11:00. Reception to follow.
