Wilbert J. Martin, Jim, was born in Portland, Oregon to Wilbert A. Martin and Reba E. Martin.

He attended Laurelhurst Grade School, Grant High School, Lewis and Clark College and Portland State College.

Jim proudly served in the Airforce Reserve and was drafted into the US Army.  He actively served in the Korean War.

Jim was a proud Machinist.  He worked through high school with his father at Martin Tool Specialties Co.  He worked for 9 years for Cascade Corporation.  Jim started Martin's Machine Shop in 1972.  He spent his life perfecting his craft and truly loved it.  He worked until passing away May 4, 2017.

Jim married his wonderful wife Alverna in 1959.  He loved his family so much and spent lots of time with his daughters, Monica and Marie and his special grandkids.  He loved being outdoors with his family and friends.  Sports were always a part of his spare time.  He would water ski in the Willamette River in front of the Anchorage restaurant, and ski Mt. Hood at Ski Bowl.  The family loved sailing on the Columbia River.  Jim raced his sailboat and did offshore racing too!  Jim and Alverna are life members of Rose City Yacht Club.

When Jim wasn’t actively involved in sports, he was routing for the Oregon State University sports teams. He loved watching the Beavers play and enjoyed attending football games!   As a long time season ticket holder, he would be the first one in the stadium and the last one out.  Win or lose, he always stood by his Beavers.

Besides his strong work ethic, Jim had a ceaseless charm that drew people to him. He was the friend of all who were fortunate to know him! Any chance you got to spend time with him was special. He would tell the best stories and always looked at the good things in life. If he ever had a bad day, you wouldn't know it. He was always happy and smiling. Spending time chatting with Jim always made people feel good!

Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years Alverna; daughters Monica Baxter, Marie Griffin and her husband Scott; his grandchildren, Nicole Martin, Kayla and Samantha Baxter, Casey and Chase Griffin; and great-grandchild Kyndell.
