Welcome to the memorial page for

Raymond August Meucci

June 17, 1923 ~ December 30, 2017 (age 94)

Ray and his twin brother, Gene, were born on June 17, 1923 in Raymond, Washington to working class Italian parents, Bruno and Savina Meucci.  They joined older sister, Elvera.

Ray always had fond memories of his early childhood in Raymond.  He and his siblings spent quality time at their grandparents farm where they raised chickens and had a cow.

After his father lost a leg in a work related accident at the mill where he was employed, the family moved to Portland, Oregon where Bruno could receive benefits from the VA.  He was a WWI veteran.

The move was not an easy one for the family.  After his parents marriage broke up, Ray and Gene spent several years living at St. Mary's Home for Boys, which was an orphanage in those days.  Once reunited with their father and his new wife, Ray and Gene's life took on a more normal note.

When the twins turned 17 they decided to visit their mother in Los Angeles, California.  She had remarried and the boys had another, younger, sister, Anna Marie.

They enrolled at Lincoln High School in Los Angeles.  Ray got a job working for the Pullman Company as an electricians assistant.

In December 1942, Ray enlisted in the Navy.  He served until the end of WWII.

During that time he was reacquainted with his cousins best friend, Audrey Innocenti.  They married August 5, 1945 and were married for 53 years until her death on August 20, 1998.

Ray worked as a sales driver for Langendorf Bread and for Bocci-Blownberger beer distributors.

In 1948 Ray and Audrey's first daughter, Sharon, was born.  She was followed by Joann in 1954 and Barbara in 1959.

Ray's life experiences eventually led him into the grocery business.  In 1950 Ray and his partner, Gino Cipolla, opened their first store on 20th and Hawthorne.  After selling the 'Triangle Market' in 1955, they opened their next store on 39th and Holgate.  Another store followed in 1960 and their fourth store a year later.  He remained in the grocery business until the late 1970's.

In 1981 he went to work for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.  He became zone manager for the National Small Business Association.  He later worked as an independent contractor into his early 80's.

In 2002, Ray married Mary Ellen Doshas.  They were companions until his death on December 30, 2017.  They enjoyed trips together and each other.  She made him happy in his twilight years.

Golf was Ray's passion and he actually made two holes in one!  He was a 53 year member of Riverside Golf and Country Club, where he and his cronies spent many happy hours golfing and playing cards.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, sister Vera Muro, twin brother Eugene Meucci, loving wife Audrey and grandson Todd Meucci.

He is survived by his wife, MaryEllen, sister, Anna Marie Popp (Bob), daughters Sharon Meucci (Jim Otis), Joann Meucci-Smith (Gary), Barbara Wolsborn (Chuck), grandsons Jeff Meucci and Josh Wolsborn (Tara), and granddaughter Maureen Wolsborn.  Four great-grandchildren, Noah and Audrey Meucci and Brayden and Charlie Wolsborn.

He will be missed by many.

A Mass of Christian Burial is pending.
