Norma Kathleen (Kott) GabrielDecember 29, 1933 ~ May 10, 2017 (age 83)
Norma Kathleen “Kitty” Gabriel passed away on May 10, 2017 in Portland. She was born December 29, 1933 in Huron, South Dakota; the third child of John Kott and Bertha May Ayres. When she was 8, her family moved to Portland. Norma graduated from Washington High School. She married Virley Thurman Gabriel, Jr, on November 14, 1953, at the Ascension Catholic Church in Portland. She was known to her husband’s family by her nickname of “Kitty.” Her husband, Virley, passed away June 14, 1977 in Portland.
She is survived by her son Michael Gabriel and his wife Debbie of Portland, her daughter Marilyn Gabriel Mills and husband LeRoy of McLean, VA, her only grandchild Michelle Mills (Marilyn), several sisters-in-law, a brother in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Norma was active in the St. Agatha’s Catholic Church’s Altar Society and volunteered at its Adoration Chapel and Thrifty Cottage. She loved tending her garden, particularly the hybrid roses grafted by her deceased father, John. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, card games, couponing, and socializing with her Adult Swim friends at Nelson’s Nautilus in Milwaukee. Her great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her well.
Norma became notable throughout the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood for her high level of activity and independence (including mastery of the Tri-Met system), despite suffering from progressively crippling scoliosis. She never felt sorry for herself, and frequently donated food or toiletries to those she deemed less fortunate. The family thanks the dedicated personnel in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) for the great care they provided her in her final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held for Norma at St. Agatha’s Catholic Church, 7983 SE 15th Ave, Portland, OR 97202 on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at 11:00 am.
