Welcome to the memorial page for

Mary Gearey (Gearey) Jacobson

January 8, 1927 ~ February 5, 2017 (age 90)

The Piano Brothers

Mary Gearey Jacobson passed away peacefully of natural causes in Portland after recently celebrating her 90th birthday with family and friends.

She spent her youth in in the 1930’s mill town of Westport, Oregon tagging along with her father Dr. Verne Gearey, as he treated patients in small towns along the Columbia River. Her family then moved to Corvallis for her father’s medical practice where she and her sister, both talented pianists, often played duet concerts on the OSU Campus. Mary took flying lessons in hopes of joining the WWII Women’s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron. After graduation from Corvallis High School, she attended Stanford University earning her degree in International Relations. She continued working at Stanford for several years counseling freshman women as they adjusted to college life and university studies.

Mary raised her family in Eugene, treasuring trips to her family’s Devil’s Lake home in Lincoln City as well as their travels to play tennis in La Jolla, California. Having fun with her grandsons as they grew up was her greatest joy. She loved good conversation with her array of friends in book groups, cooking classes and the “Tuesdays” women’s group. Mary also enjoyed volunteering for the Oregon Bach Festival and was a long standing member of the Eugene P.E.O. Chapter.

Mary had an abundant joie de vivre, great personal style, a sharp intellect and good sense of fun. She will always be celebrated by her family as a loving mother and grandmother whose cheery and positive outlook on life was an inspiration. She is survived by her children Meg and Tim and five grandchildren. A family service will be held in Hood River.

Remembrances to OSC P.E.O. Charitable Trust, c/o Chapter DH, P.O. Box 51316, Eugene, OR 97405
