James Grant Newton of Milwaukie passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the age of 89 on June 5.

Jim was born March 2, 1928 in Portland to Albert and Gladys Newton, the fifth of eight sons, and spent his formative years in Hazeldale and Garden Home. Jim attended Garden Home School and Beaverton High School. Like his dad and brothers, Jim started working summers for Portland Gas and Coke Company (which later became Northwest Natural Gas Company) at the age of 16, and had a 42-year career with the company, retiring in 1986.

Jim married Eleanor Avolio on August 1, 1953, and together they raised their two daughters, Christie and Sharon, in the house where Eleanor grew up on SE Yukon Street in Portland, built in 1928 by her father, Vincenzo Avolio. After 33 years of marriage, Eleanor passed away in June 1987. Jim married Marilyn Lafond Neill on May 7, 1994, and they made their home in Milwaukie, where they were members of Christ the King Catholic Church and enjoyed 23 years together traveling, cooking and gardening. Jim was an avid Ducks fan.

Besides his parents and Eleanor, Jim was preceded in death by his brothers, Donal, Malcolm, Harley, Ted and Raymond. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Christie (Dave) Hammond of Portland, and Sharon (Bob) Duste of Glen Ellen, California; brothers Rick (Lotte) Newton of Lake Grove and Robert (Barbara) Newton of Milwaukie; grandsons Trevor, DJ and Paul Hammond; great-grandchildren Makena, Kyle and Laila Hammond; step-daughters Terry (Janet) Neill, Karen (Peter) McMahon and Jennifer (Brian) Selby; step-grandsons Evan and Jack McMahon and Justin and Cameron Selby; and was lovingly called “Uncle Jim and Jimmy” by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, June 10 at 11:00 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church, 7414 SE Michael Drive, Milwaukie, with a reception following in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to your favorite charity.
