Erhard Ulrich passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Happy Valley on January 30, 2018 at the age of 101. During this past century, he lived life to the fullest, in early and later in life. In the 1940’s, he climbed to the top of Mt. Hood where he saw the sunrise while on the summit. During his 99th and 100th birthdays he went zip-lining and rode in a hot air balloon. On his 101st Birthday, he rode a horse through Hood River in a celebration parade with his family and friends.
Erhard was born on September 20, 1916 in Deshler, NE, which is a small farming community of German descendants. He was the oldest of seven brothers and one sister. In 1918 the family moved to Clover, ID to homestead and farm various crops. In 1939, they moved to Boring, OR where his family grew strawberries and raspberries. Erhard served in the US Army during WWII, stationed on the West Coast and the Aleutian Islands. After the war, he bought a small farm in Boring where he raised sheep, grew blackcaps and wonderful vegetable gardens.
During that time he also worked for Northwestern Transfer Co. He married Tillie Ann Wewer in 1948 and they had one daughter, Kathleen. After 34 years of marriage, his wife passed away.
In 1984, Erhard married Verda Haydon and they enjoyed 21 years together until her demise in 2005. Erhard continued to enjoy his vegetable and flower gardening, bowling, traveling, church senior activities, and special time with family. The highlight of his later life was going on the Honor Flight of Oregon for WWII veterans to Washington DC.
Erhard is survived by his brothers, Ed (Joanne) Ulrich and Gene (Pat) Ulrich; his sister, Elva Stanley; his daughter Kathleen Sale and her daughters, Angela Miyake and Heather (David) Miyake-Salinas, and her step-sons Eric (Soko) Romney and Chris (Desa) Romney;her step-daughter, Candice (Fabian) Rodriguez and step-son, Darren Sale, his step-daughter Junia (Nick) Eufers and her children, Dan Parks and Vershell Rogers; and great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Courtney, Landon, Ethan, Quentin, Drew, Mica, Mavi, Cordell, Daniel, Brandon, Sebastian and Scarlett. He also had seven great-great-grandchildren. Erhard was an adored father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather who will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Happy Valley, OR on February 10 at 12:00 noon. Please join us to celebrate an extraordinary life well lived.
